André Cottavoz was born in 1922 in Saint-Marcellin near the town of Grenoble in France. His passion for painting started at an early age, encouraged by his mother. He attended École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France graduating in 1945. After WWII, he and Pierre Coquet started Noisme (Sanzisme in French), a group of painters who also referred to themselves as the Lyon School for New Figuration. This group was mostly artist under 30 years old and who’s sole purpose was to paint with no particular kind of technique.
Later in 1953 he was awarded the Fénénon Prize by the University of Paris. His friendship with Kiyoshi Tamenaga helped get his work into Japan. Most of his work is found today in public and private collections.
