André Hambourg (1909-1999) was a prolific French painter known for his romantic compositions, luminous seascapes, and beach scenes. Born in Paris, Hambourg began his artistic education at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in 1926, studying sculpture before transitioning to painting under Lucien Simon at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

Hambourg's career was marked by early success and diverse experiences. At just 19, he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Taureau in Paris. In 1933, he won the Prix de la Villa Abd-el-Tif, which led to a decade-long stay in North Africa, significantly influencing his work.

During World War II, Hambourg served as a military reporter and war correspondent, experiences that he later documented in two illustrated books. After the war, he resumed his artistic career and became the official painter of the French Navy in 1952, allowing him to travel extensively and gather inspiration from around the world.

Hambourg's oeuvre is characterized by its versatility. He painted portraits, nudes, landscapes, still-lifes, and compositions. His work often captured the unique light and atmosphere of various locations, including Normandy, Venice, London, and Istanbul. He was also a skilled illustrator, contributing to numerous collectors' books over nearly four decades.

Throughout his career, Hambourg received numerous honors and distinctions, including being made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1951 and later promoted to Commandeur. His works are now held in prestigious collections, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne and the Musée national de la Marine.
