Moïse Kisling, born Mojżesz Kisling (1891 –1953), a Polish born French painter.  He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Austria-Hungary where his teachers encouraged him to go to Paris.  In 1910 we find him in Montmartre. He volunteered for the French Foreign Legend and after being severely wounded was awarded French citizenship.

Married to Renée Kisling (Gros) he lived and worked in Montparnasse after the war.  By 1913 he took a residence and art studio in Montparnasse as well as traveling to Southern France.  His home and studio were ransacked after WWII.  This is the same building Pascin, Modigliani and Zborowski lived in.  (Modigliani painted his portrait in 1916).  His style in painting landscapes is often compared to Chagall, but his ability to paint the female body is what gathered the most acclaim.

After volunteering at the age of 49 for the French Army in WWII, he feared for his life under German occupation and emigrated to the US.  He settled in Southern California and had an exhibit in 1942.  He stayed in CA until 1946.

Kisling returned to France and died in 1953.
