Sheila McInnes was born in Kirkcaldy in Fife in 1963. She studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art and qualified as an architect in 1988. She worked in an architectural practice for a time but, becoming more and more drawn to her love of painting and drawing, she decided to pursue life as an artist and began exhibiting her paintings in 1991.

Since then, she has developed her highly individual style. With an artist's eye, she beautifully observes situations. Her paintings are intensely personal, they capture her everyday life, her response to things that she has experienced, either yesterday, in her childhood or even events that she imagines might have been. Her paintings of dogs reach back to her own longing for a dog as a child.

Working in acrylic, she paints in layers and scrapes back using varied tools, creating a rich texture. Her work has been described as ‘a mixture of the naïve, the personal, and the sophisticated' in its handling of color and tone.

Sheila McInnes exhibits regularly in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London and her work has become much sought after.
